Val d’Isère and Tignes–early season

One week into the ski season and we have a good base for off-piste with good piste conditions too. Temperature is now low so the snow canons are working, so things will only get stronger from here on. The off piste isn’t good yet though because conditions are too changeable – going from powder to wind pack and crust within 10 metres. We need another good dump of snow really. Even without the snow the off piste will open up as ski numbers increase and accessible areas gradually become ski-pisted. The advantage with that is any rocks will have been exposed  – so no unpleasant surprises.

New moving pathway at the top of Solaise. I don’t think this is a good idea at this very busy location. When the snow builds up the snowboarders will no doubt be slitherling along the top of it and trying to jump over it. They removed the tow rope and the button lift – both of which could get very busy and neither of which obstructed the piste!
